SUBARUS CROSSING THE SIMPSON DESERT - PRESSING ON FOR PARKINSON'S
A Journey of Support, Awareness,
and Community Spirit
In June 2025, a determined group of friends set out to drive five vintage Subarus across some of Australia’s most challenging terrain — from Tasmania to the Simpson Desert — to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s Tasmania.
After 28 days and more than 8,000 kilometres, they’ve done it.
What started as a wild idea became an incredible journey of connection, awareness, and hope — and raised $25,000 (and counting) to support Tasmanians living with Parkinson’s.
Why We Did This
Every day, 38 Australians are diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Through this campaign, we wanted to make sure no one faces it alone.
In 2016, after surviving prostate cancer, Malcolm McGinn and his mates rode postie bikes from Hobart to Cairns — raising $70,000 for men’s health. Nearly a decade later, they reunited, this time for Parkinson’s, restoring four 1980s Subaru L Series wagons and a Brumby ute to take on the Simpson Desert.
The Journey
The Subarus travelled from Hobart to Devonport, crossed Bass Strait to Geelong, and continued through Indented Head, Nhill, Morgan, Mount Ive Station, Ceduna, and the rugged Goog’s Track.
From there, they ventured through Kingoonya, Glendambo, Coober Pedy, Kulgera, Alice Springs, Old Andado, Mount Dare, and Dalhousie Springs, before tackling the remote Simpson Desert.
The return leg took them via The Painted Desert, Arckaringa Station, Coober Pedy, William Creek, Farina, Blinman, Rawnsley Park Station, Quorn, Peterborough, Broken Hill, Menindee, Ivanhoe, Hay, Berrigan, Corowa, Wodonga, Indented Head, Geelong, and back across Bass Strait to Hobart.
Along the way, they met countless people who shared their own Parkinson’s stories, donated generously, and reminded the crew why this mission mattered.
The Impact
-
8,000+ kilometres across four states and territories
-
$25,000 raised (every cent to Parkinson’s Tasmania)
-
Dozens of community conversations sparking awareness and connection
-
Zero campaign costs to Parkinson’s Tasmania — the trip was fully self-funded by participants, including vehicle purchase, modifications, travel, accommodation, and ferry crossings.
